Examples of Attribution

This Creative Commons wiki page has a great explanation of how to do CC attribution, along with examples. Start there.

Along with my guidelines above, here are some good examples of how you might attribute my work. Hyperlinks may or may not always be possible in your situation, and that’s ok.

If you have any questions about the right way to attribute my work, please don’t hesitate to get in contact. I’m here to help!

 Derivation

A derivative work is that which is derived from another piece of work. The license provides for this, provided the work is attributed and used non-commercially.

Examples of Derivation

Derivatives of my work include alterations of my work in any way. But here are some use case examples:

  • A version of my work with a different color grade.

  • Cropped versions of my work, including the removal of any watermarks.

  • Part or all of a piece of my work being part of a new composite piece. Example: You like a sky in one of my photos, so you composite my photo into your own photo to replace your sky.

  • Parts of my videos cut and re-edited into a new video, whether as an inclusion with works by others, or only an edit of my own works.

  • Non-ShareAlike use. The “SA” part of the license means, “If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.” If you wish to use my work (or derive from it) under any other license, you need to get my permission first.

 Exce(m)ptions

If you’re interested in using my work under any capacity other than CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license and my guidelines above, you’ll need to contact me and negotiate that permission first. Examples might include (but are not limited to):

  • Commercial use of or derivation of my work. This includes revenue forms that may seem “indirect”, such as promotional materials, or even monetized posts or videos. For instance: Your blog post is sponsored or ad-supported, and you earn money for every click, view, or impression, you are making money off of that post. If it includes my work, you are making money with (and from) my work.

  • You wish to use or derive from my work but not attribute it. This is outside of the given license, so you’ll need to work with me to come to an agreement.

 Logos & Signatures

The “Ryan Welsh Signature” and “Ryan L. Welsh Bindrune” logo assets are not licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. All rights are reserved and strictly for my personal use to identify myself, my brand, and my work.

Signature - Ryan Welsh - White.png

“Ryan Welsh Signature”, all rights reserved.

Bindrune - Ryan Welsh - White.png

For the purposes of derived works, if the logos appear on the original work as a watermark or content of the work, it may either be kept intact or cropped/trimmed, keeping in line with the concept of “derivative work”.

However, these logos may never be added to another piece of work where they do not already natively exist.
